Sixteen Young Farmers from Te Awamutu College, under the supervision of Mr Prout and Ms Gawn took part in the Agri Futures Clash of the Colleges competition on Thursday 10 April in Clevedon. Clash of the Colleges (Te Tukinga Kura Tuarua) is a fun, fast-paced, Amazing Race-style competition that sees students go head-to-head in teams of four, battling it out to be crowned champions!
Students were put to the test with 15 hands-on modules, each allowing just six minutes to complete. The challenges covered a wide range of practical agricultural skills, including artificial insemination, CPR, wool classing, plant identification, ruminant digestion, shearing handpiece setup, wire fencing, and even changing a quad bike wheel.
To balance the intensity, there were plenty of fun activities too, like gumboot throwing and sulky races—adding a healthy dose of laughter to the day.
While the students certainly enjoyed themselves, the experience was also rich with learning. It was a fantastic opportunity to apply knowledge in real-world scenarios, pick up new skills, and connect with peers from other schools. By the end of the day, our students walked away with new friendships, great memories, and valuable experience.
Standout Te Awamutu College students were:
- Jorjaina Mathieson – winner of the Senior Girls Gumboot Throw and the only girl to make it into the bonus round of the Pie Eating competition.
- Casey Smith – winner of the Junior Girls Gumboot Throw.
